Why is Sri Vishnu Devala also called Maha Devalaya? You might wonder, standing before this grand structure. Well, let me tell you. Sri Vishnu Devalaya, nestled within the Temple of the Tooth Relic complex here in Kandy, holds a special place in the hearts of Sri Lankans. This shrine, dedicated to the god Vishnu, enjoys a unique position as one of the Hatara Devalas – four devalayas deeply connected to the Sri Lankan monarchy and revered by Buddhists and Hindus alike. Its significance is amplified by its close association with the Temple of the Tooth Relic and the Royal Palace. Sri Vishnu Devalaya wasn’t always known by this name. In fact, its history is a testament to the intertwining of cultures and beliefs. Robert Knox, an Englishman held captive in Sri Lanka during the 17th century, referred to the deity here as “Aluth Nuwara Deiyo,” suggesting the deity was originally venerated in Aluth Nuwara, Kegalle District. This deity, initially known as “Upulvan Deiyo” (meaning “the color of a lotus”), later came to be known as Vishnu, possibly due to their similar blue complexions. Adding further intrigue, a 19th-century poem called “Ehelapola Varnanawa” refers to this very shrine as “Rama Devalaya.” Even the architecture of Sri Vishnu Devalaya whispers tales of its rich past. The long “Digge,” once a vibrant dancing hall honoring the resident deity, now serves as a space for devotees to gather in prayer. Sri Vishnu Devalaya, with its intricate layers of history, stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the captivating fusion of cultures that defines Sri Lanka.
