Trinity College

Founded in 1870, Trinity College stands as a testament to history and ambition. Bishop Charles Perry envisioned a place where bright minds could flourish. Trinity College became the oldest residential college at the University of Melbourne. Did you know the first student, John Francis Stretch, arrived in 1872? Trinity College quickly became integral to Melbourne’s academic landscape. Affiliated with the University of Melbourne in 1876, it expanded its influence. Bishop James Moorhouse founded the Trinity College Theological School in 1877. Its first theological student was Arthur Green. Trinity College broke barriers in 1883 by admitting Lilian Helen Alexander as a non-resident student. This marked a turning point. With the establishment of the Trinity Women’s Hostel in 1886, now Janet Clarke Hall, Trinity became a pioneer in co-residential education in Australia. The Clarke’s building, designed by Edmund Blacket, stands as a proud testament to this era and is on the Victorian Heritage Register. Over the years, Trinity College has continued to evolve. The Trinity College Foundation Studies program began in 1989, opening doors for international students. From the iconic Leeper Building, originally the Lodge, to the modern Gourlay Building, affectionately known as “Woodheap,” Trinity’s architecture reflects its rich history. The college grounds, known as the Bulpadock, provide a tranquil space for students to relax and connect. Trinity College isn’t just about academics. It has a vibrant social scene. The Trinity College Associated Clubs (TCAC) orchestrates a multitude of events. From the annual orientation week to the various sports competitions, there’s always something happening. Trinity has a strong sporting legacy. It participates in intercollegiate competitions ranging from Australian rules football to rowing. The college song, written by former warden Evan Burge, echoes through the halls, celebrating the spirit of Trinity. The Choir of Trinity College, known for its choral music, fills the historic Horsfall Chapel with beautiful melodies during Evensong. Trinity College continues to shape future leaders and foster a sense of community. Its alumni have made significant contributions to society, from the arts to politics and beyond.
