“Tribute to the Past” is more than just a sculpture; it’s a symbol of a bygone era. Here, amidst Steelworkers Park, you’re standing face-to-face with a legacy of hard work and community spirit. Roman Villareal, a local artist who grew up in Chicago’s Southeast Side, captured the essence of this area’s history in bronze. He portrayed a steelworker, strong and proud as he embraced his family. They stand together, a testament to the generations who found life and livelihood in this region, where steel was king.

The first steel mill opened here in the nineteenth century. This area, strategically placed at the meeting of the Calumet River and Lake Michigan, drew in immigrants from Sweden, Scotland, and Germany. They came seeking opportunities in the steel mills and local industries. Just over a century later, the mill became a landmark in the United States when it was acquired by US Steel Corporation. Jobs at the industrial complex attracted a diverse mix of people—Italians, Poles, Mexicans, and African-Americans—who made this place their home. These workers made the mill a thriving hub, employing over 20,000 people at its peak. It covered a staggering 600 acres, much of it built upon landfill made of slag from the molten steel—a testament to their hard work and the industrial landscape they shaped.

But times changed. The mill, once a symbol of prosperity, began to dwindle in the 1970s. It eventually closed in 1992, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and a sense of loss for many families. Today, “Tribute to the Past” serves as a reminder of that era. The sculpture stands in Steelworkers Park, a symbol of resilience and a community that continues to thrive.
