Gazing across the water, can you envision a fortress rising from the sea? This, my friends, is Trekroner Fort. Trekroner has guarded the entrance to Copenhagen’s harbor for centuries. Its story begins not here, but a few hundred meters north. In 1713, three weathered ships of the line were sunk, forming a makeshift battery. One of these ships, named Trekroner, lent its name to the future fortress. The Trekroner we see today began its construction in 1787. It played a crucial role in the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801, standing firm against the British fleet. Trekroner again faced the British onslaught in 1807. While the city suffered, the fort held its ground. Following these tumultuous events, Trekroner underwent significant enhancements between 1818 and 1828, and again in 1860. Despite its strengthened defenses, Trekroner’s military importance waned after World War I. In 1934, it was sold to the Copenhagen harbor services. During the German occupation of Denmark, Trekroner served as a barracks. After the war, it briefly housed German officers and the former German ambassador as prisoners. The fort then stood vacant until 1984, when it was finally opened to the public. Today, Trekroner stands as a testament to Denmark’s rich maritime history.
