These three barrows are the reason why this place is called Trehøj, which translates to “Three Mounds”. They are five to six meters high and made of 650,000 pieces of grass turf. They stand as a reminder of ancient rituals, each mound built in the early Bronze Age, between 1800 and 1000 BC. From the top of these mounds, you can see a stunning panorama. In the distance, you can see the towns of Aarhus and Ebeltoft, and the islands of Samsø, Tunø, and Hjelm. Trehøj is one of the most prominent of 11 burial mounds in the area. The others are spread across the landscape of the Nationalpark Mols Bjerge. The hills of Mols Bjerge were formed by the last ice age, and the area around Trehøj is one of the largest grassland areas in East Jutland. The land is mostly covered in bent grass, which turns a wavy red and violet in summer. The unique landscape was created by thousands of years of intensive grazing and haymaking. Today the area is protected by a national park, and the landscape is preserved with grazing sheep, goats, cattle, and horses. The open grasslands are also home to many rare insects. Trehøj is a special place where history and nature come together. The area was once a sacred space for ancient cultures, and today the site is a place of peace and beauty.
