Have you ever heard the familiar phrase “from humble beginnings”? Well, stand here before the Tree of Life Missionary Baptist Church, and you’ll see a symbol of that very idea. This church began as a small mission in the home of Reverend Billy J. Ray in 1964. With just thirteen members, their vision was simple: to spread the word of God. The group met in what was basically a storefront and a vacant lot – a far cry from the majestic building standing before you today. In 1965, Tree of Life was officially organized. Reverend Ray continued as pastor, a man with a clear vision for the church’s future and a strong determination to reach those who had yet to know the Lord. For nine years, the congregation grew steadily. Pastor Ray’s dream of a more permanent structure started to take form in 1968, and by 1970, the church had moved into the building that includes the main sanctuary. The cornerstone was laid in 1972. The church, however, continued to grow. This wasn’t just about buildings; it was about people and their faith. The members, inspired by Pastor Ray’s vision, built the impressive structure. In 1981, the ground-breaking ceremony for additional classrooms and offices took place. This was a testament to the increasing importance of the church in the community. Though Pastor Ray sadly passed away in 1983, his legacy lingered, a guiding star for those who followed in his footsteps. Tree of Life continued to thrive under the leadership of Reverend William David Lowe, Jr., who served for almost three decades. During his tenure, the vision of the building was finally realized – a tribute to Pastor Ray’s unwavering commitment. The church flourished under Pastor Lowe, further developing community outreach programs and a strong choir, The Voices of Watts. The church’s story continues to be written today, under the leadership of Pastor Marcus Alexander Murchinson. His commitment extends to both the congregation and the community, fulfilling the church’s mission to be a beacon of hope and a source of support for all who seek it.
