Seven hundred years of history. That’s what the Planier Lighthouse represents. This isn’t just any lighthouse. It’s a beacon of resilience a symbol of Marseille itself. We stand here today near Traverse du Phare a street named after this maritime giant.

For centuries sailors relied on Planier for guidance. Initially a simple stone shelter it evolved. In 1319 an ordinance by Robert of Anjou mandated construction of the first lighthouse. Boat captains contributed 100 stones each. Imagine the sheer manpower that went into building that tower. It stood 12 meters tall fueled by burning pine branches and coal.

Through the years the lighthouse was rebuilt and expanded. In 1773 it reached 23 meters. Fourteen oil lamps with reflectors illuminated the sea visible for an incredible 19000 nautical miles. The technology advanced. In 1823 a grand landing lighthouse was added featuring the revolutionary Fresnel lens system.

The current lighthouse a majestic structure exceeding 66 meters in height is the fifth iteration. It replaced its predecessor destroyed by the Germans in August 1944. It’s a testament to perseverance. In 1986 it became automated. In 2002 it earned the prestigious title of Historic Monument.

This lighthouse isn’t just a navigational aid. It’s a cultural icon. It’s the only active lighthouse on the French Mediterranean coast protected as a historic monument. For centuries it has marked the first contact with Marseille for those arriving from the sea. It embodies the city’s spirit. Its evolution mirrors Marseille’s own journey through time. From humble beginnings to modern marvel. Think of the countless sailors who have found solace and guidance in its light. This is Traverse du Phare. A street that tells the story of a remarkable landmark. A testament to a city’s deep connection to the sea.
