A chilling incident once unfolded near the Traverse de la Verrerie. On a seemingly ordinary Thursday morning in February 2025, a dispute escalated dramatically. The Traverse de la Verrerie, usually a quiet street in Marseille’s 10th arrondissement, became the scene of a violent altercation. A 27-year-old man, caught in this conflict, resorted to desperate measures. He drew a firearm in self-defense. His assailant, however, wielded a knife. The man received a knife wound to his neck. Emergency services rushed to the Traverse de la Verrerie. They transported the injured man to the hospital. Thankfully, his injuries were not life-threatening. This incident, while shocking, highlights the Traverse de la Verrerie as more than just a street name. It’s a place where everyday life unfolds, with its share of unexpected turns. Beyond this unfortunate event, the Traverse de la Verrerie holds a connection to a prominent family in Marseille’s history. The de Queylar family, glassmakers for centuries, once had their factory near this very spot. Their story began with Guillaume de Queylar, born around 1250. Generations later, Marc-Antoine de Queylar brought his glassmaking expertise to Marseille in 1770. César de Queylar inherited the glassworks in 1829, located in the Rouet district of Marseille. After César’s death, the business continued under the name “Veuve de Queylar.” Charles de Queylar, César’s son, later moved the factory to Saint-Marcel in 1874, and then acquired another in Pont de Vivaux, not far from the Traverse de la Verrerie. The de Queylar name remained synonymous with glassmaking in Marseille until 1960. Their legacy, though faded, adds a layer of historical significance to the Traverse de la Verrerie. Today, the street serves as a reminder of both this industrial heritage and the unpredictable nature of everyday life.
