“White House.” That’s what Maison Blanche means. Now, let’s wander into the story of Traverse de la Maison Blanche in Marseille.

Once upon a time, around 1840, a merchant named Cohen built a bastide. It was called Maison Blanche. So the area got its name.

Later, in 1920, a Swiss family bought the estate. They added a lake. They also opened large windows in the bastide. It was a grand transformation.

In 1978, the City of Marseille acquired the Maison Blanche estate. The bastide became the Town Hall. It serves the 9th and 10th arrondissements.

The surrounding area, including Traverse de la Maison Blanche, retained its charm. The city preserved the park’s leisurely essence.

The Maison Blanche Park spans five hectares. It features a serene lake, lush lawns, and wooded areas. Many trees date back to the 19th century.

You can find magnolias, redwoods, and cedars. Yews and other trees also grace the landscape. Newer additions include hazelnut and banana trees.

For families, the park offers a playground. Benches allow parents to relax. They can supervise their children.

When the weather is nice, the park’s bar is open. Shaded tables offer a delightful respite. Imagine sipping a cool drink under the trees.

Interestingly, the Maison Blanche Park hosts an annual Ephemeral Arts Festival. It takes place between late May and early June. Contemporary art takes center stage. Various prestigious partners are involved.

Before it was named Maison Blanche Park it was named Parc Charles-Aznavour since July 2024.

The Traverse de la Maison Blanche, named after this historic estate, is more than just a street. It’s a connection to Marseille’s past. It reminds us of merchants, Swiss families, and city planners.
