Can a street hold the secrets of a hidden world? Here at Traverse de la Baume Loubière, the street itself whispers tales of a realm beneath our feet. Traverse de la Baume Loubière isn’t just a pathway. It’s a portal to the Baume Loubière cave, a place etched in Marseille’s history. Discovered in 1829 by J. Simonet, the cave’s name, “Loubière,” comes from the Occitan word “loubiero,” meaning “wolf’s lair.” This suggests the possible presence of wolves or their remains within.

The Traverse de la Baume Loubière saw its first expedition in 1886, almost 60 years after the cave’s discovery. Later explorations in 1893 unearthed a treasure trove of artifacts: flint knives and scrapers, a bone polisher, and pottery shards, some bearing the marks of a potter’s wheel. These finds, documented in the Bulletins et mémoires de la société d’anthropologie de Paris, hinted at the cave’s significance in prehistoric times. The cave’s mysteries are intertwined with a dark chapter. In 1898, the entrance to Baume Loubière was sealed following the murder of young Antonia Descours within its depths. This tragic event aimed to deter curious visitors and protect the site. Years later, a deathbed confession in 1915 finally revealed the murderer to be a shepherd.

Traverse de la Baume Loubière leads to a cave reborn. In 1930, the city of Marseille transformed Baume Loubière into a tourist attraction. A 15-month project made the cave accessible, installing stairs, railings, and electricity. Posters beckoned tourists with the slogan, “Tourists, attention! Don’t leave Marseille without visiting the Loubière caves.” However, this venture met its end in 1989, after a stint as a nightclub, when the city closed the cave. Today, standing on Traverse de la Baume Loubière, we stand at the threshold of a closed-off world. The cave remains sealed, its stories dormant, yet the street above continues to echo its name, a constant reminder of the hidden wonders lying beneath. Even in its silence, the Traverse de la Baume Loubière speaks volumes, inviting us to imagine the echoes of prehistoric life, the dark secrets, and the brief period of wonder it once revealed.
