Slipping through a time warp back to 1989, imagine the fresh paint smell at the Travellers Inn Motel. This wasn’t just any motel. This was a brand new, two-story chalet-style complex rising on the corner of Great South Road and Pembroke Street in Manukau. The Travellers Inn Motel offered 40 units across five freestanding chalets, all arranged around a central courtyard. Fast forward a few decades, and the Travellers Inn Motel is still welcoming travelers. It has seen touring groups, sports teams, school kids, church gatherings, and convention attendees come and go. The motel even boasts a two-star Qualmark rating. It’s a place where you could find a single room for $60, a double for $75, or a family room for $105. The communal kitchen and budget-friendly rates make it a popular choice. This has contributed to an annual turnover of around $600,000. In 2006-07, the owners, Nandro Investments Limited, spruced up the place. They knew a good location when they saw one. The Travellers Inn Motel is conveniently close to Auckland Airport and Manukau Shopping Centre. It also sits within a vibrant mix of commercial and residential buildings. While other establishments like the Camelot Arms and Silver Oaks cater to a different clientele, the Travellers Inn Motel has carved its own niche. It thrives on word-of-mouth and repeat business, a testament to its enduring appeal.
