High on this richly forested hill, the aura of Trashigang Goemba embraces us. This isn’t just a monastery. It is a gateway to serenity. Built in 1782, Trashigang Goemba stands as a testament to Bhutan’s spiritual heritage. The 12th Je Khenpo, Lam Kunga Jamtsho, founded this holy meditation center.

Trashigang Goemba offers more than just spiritual richness. Its location boasts amazing flora and fauna. The Goemba is perched opposite the Hongtsho valley on the Thimphu-Punakha highway. We stand at an altitude of 3200m.

Legend says the name Trashigang comes from an auspicious encounter. When Je Kunga Gyatsho sought to build the monastery, he met a woodcutter named Tashi. Seeing this as a good omen, he named the monastery Trashigang.

Inside the lhakhang, statues of Je Khenpos who meditated here reside. Trashigang Goemba houses sacred artifacts. One notable item is a statue crafted from the 22nd Je Khenpo’s tooth. Also, the preserved flesh of Palden Lhamo, Bhutan’s chief protective deity, is believed to be hidden in the goenkhang.

Look closely at the 300-year-old canvas paintings. Admire the statues of Bhutan’s Chief Abbots. They once meditated here. Trashigang Goemba is home to monks and nuns seeking enlightenment. Some elderly citizens spend their final years in this tranquil haven. It is a place where ultimate happiness is found in simplicity.

To reach this sanctuary, you have a choice. A 10km dirt road from Dochula Thimphu-Punakha Highway will take you here. Alternatively, a three-hour hike through hemlock and rhododendron forests will lead you to Trashigang Goemba.

Imagine the dedication of Druthob Lam Kado. He has meditated here for over 60 years. Trashigang Goemba is more than a destination. It is a journey into the heart of Bhutanese spirituality. Feel the different dimension. Trashigang Goemba has been a meditation center since the 18th century. Sixteen monks and a few nuns reside here. Many small houses for meditation surround the Goemba.
