Nestled in the heart of Tranbjerg, Tranbjerg Kirke has witnessed centuries of history unfold. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this community. Tranbjerg Kirke isn’t just a building. The Romanesque core, crafted from granite boulders, speaks to a time of simpler elegance. Notice the intricate relief work, particularly the south portal’s depiction of the Crucifixion. The Archangel Michael stands at Jesus’ right hand, and the Apostle John at his left. The north portal features a tympanum depicting the Descent from the Cross. Beside it, a curious granite block displays a lion biting its own tail, a symbol rich with symbolic meaning. Inside, a late 15th-century altarpiece draws the eye. It portrays St. Ursula with ten of her 11,000 virgin handmaidens, a testament to the church’s dedication to this saint. The Apostle John stands to her left, holding a chalice. On her right, the Virgin Mary cradles the infant Jesus. Even the seemingly ordinary holds hidden stories at Tranbjerg Kirke. The baptismal font, carved from granite in the Romanesque style, features two pairs of lion bodies sharing a single human head. A granite block, once lost and later rediscovered, rests near the font, adding another chapter to the church’s tale. It was found on Slet Søndergaard and returned to its rightful place in 1988. Tranbjerg Kirke has been more than just a place of worship. It served as an annex to Holme Kirke until 1973, when it finally gained its independence as a separate parish.
