Can you imagine a football field right here on Trachenberger Platz? It’s hard to picture now with the Netto and the bustling square, but this was once the home turf of VfR Dresden. Trachenberger Platz, established in December 1925, wasn’t always a shopping hub. It was a sporting center, a community gathering spot, and a place of resilience through changing times. The football club, VfR Dresden, was founded in 1908. Their games brought life and energy to the square. This lasted until 1933 when the club was forced to merge with others, forming Sportfreunde 01 Dresden. The football field didn’t disappear with the team though. It played a different role after World War II. From August 1945 to March 1946, the field transformed into a resettlement camp for those displaced by the war. Trachenberger Platz became a refuge. Football never returned to the Platz, but the spirit of community remained. The Sportfreunde 01 Dresden’s sports casino stood here, housing a popular refreshment hall into the 1990s. Trachenberger Platz has seen many changes. The “Drachen-Drogerie” and “Voigt’s Gasthaus” are now just memories. The Barbara-Apotheke, opened in 1906, is a link to the past, still serving the community today. Even the daycare, once a single-story building from 1965 and later a company kindergarten for the nearby VEB Purotex, has been reborn. In 2019, a modern two-story building replaced the old, retaining the Platz’s character with its clinker brick facade. Trachenberger Platz is more than just a square. It’s a testament to Dresden’s resilience, a place where sport, community, and history have intertwined for over a century.
