Here stands TPU Jombang. This cemetery whispers stories of life and loss amidst Jakarta’s vibrant pulse.

TPU Jombang serves as a final resting place. It gained prominence during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Do you see that expansion over there? In July 2021, TPU Jombang opened a new area. This was to accommodate the increasing number of Covid-19 burials. The original site was nearly full.

The new land added 4000 square meters. It provided space for approximately 1000 additional graves. This expansion ensured dignified burials could continue.

Back then, Nazmudin from the Housing Department said that the new site was close to the existing TPU Jombang. Land clearing and road improvements were carried out quickly. The goal was to make the new section operational as soon as possible.

Local residents were recruited. They became part of the cemetery staff. This created jobs and helped the community cope with the crisis.

At one point, seven hearses waited in line. They were queuing for burials. Heavy machinery worked across the Perigi Toll Road. It prepared more land for Covid-19 victims.

Tabroni, head of TPU Jombang, noted the urgency. The first Covid-19 burial area had reached capacity. The new site quickly saw its first 20 burials. Eventually, the new area was projected to accommodate 800 to 1000 graves.

In early January 2021, another new block opened. The previous one was full. By that time, 494 Covid-19 victims were buried here. On average, six to seven bodies were interred daily.

TPU Jombang faced immense pressure. In December 2020 alone, 117 Covid-19 burials occurred. The first week of January saw another 38. Despite the challenges, the cemetery staff managed. They ensured respectful and timely burials.

TPU Jombang stands as a testament to resilience. It reflects Jakarta’s fight against the pandemic. This place of rest reminds us of the lives lost. It also shows the community’s spirit in times of adversity.
