“Tower Abutments” sounds like a modern ruin doesn’t it? Well, here at the Aloha Tower, it is a story of both welcome and wartime vigilance. The Aloha Tower greeted Honolulu immigrants like the Statue of Liberty greeted New York immigrants.

Opened in 1926, the Aloha Tower quickly became a landmark. It cost $160,000. That is about $2,805,206 in today’s money. For four decades, this ten-story tower was Hawaii’s tallest structure.

Its lighthouse guided vessels. Its clock was one of the largest in the United States. The Aloha Tower was a beacon for visitors. “ALOHA” was etched on its walls. This greeted ship passengers entering Honolulu Harbor.

Before air travel, ships were the only way to reach Oʻahu. “Steamer Days” or “Boat Days” celebrated ship arrivals. Crowds gathered to welcome passengers. Lei sellers were enterprising. The Royal Hawaiian Band and hula dancers often performed. This tradition continued until jets arrived in the 1950s.

When the Pearl Harbor attack happened on December 7, 1941, everything changed. The United States Navy took control of Aloha Tower. Public access was restricted. The beacon was shut off. The white building was painted in camouflage. This minimized detection. The Aloha Tower became a control center for American military convoys in the Pacific. Army sentries patrolled until 1947. The camouflage paint was then sandblasted off. The building returned to civilian control.

Today, the Aloha Tower houses Hawaii’s Department of Transportation Harbors Division harbor operators. It still welcomes visitors. Piers 10 and 11 are still docking ports for cruise ships.

Hawaii Pacific University has expanded its campus here. The Aloha Tower Marketplace is revitalized. It is a mixed-use space now. You can find eateries and community gathering spaces.

In 2004, there was even a proposal to build an underground highway tunnel. It was controversial. There are also plans for a Skyline station near the Aloha Tower. It’s expected to open in 2031. The area around the Aloha Tower will be redeveloped with mixed-use condos.

So, as you stand here at the Tower Abutments, remember its past. It once defended against invaders. It’s more than just ruins. It is an icon of Honolulu. It is a testament to Hawaii’s welcoming spirit and resilience.
