Flickering stained-glass windows illustrate stories of saints at Tours-i Szent M\u00e1rton-templom. This modern church stands in Budapest’s Vizafog\u00f3 district. Imagine this area decades ago.
Tours-i Szent M\u00e1rton \u00e9s Fl\u00fcei Szent Mikl\u00f3s-pl\u00e9b\u00e1niatemplom, as it is fully named, represents faith and community. Its story began amid challenging times.
In 1932, J\u00f3zsef Kaiser was tasked with creating a new parish. He was a chaplain at Szent Margit Parish. This area was bordered by the Dr\u00e1va Street, R\u00f6ppenty\u0171 Street, R\u00e1kos Creek and the Danube.
By 1935, Kaiser moved to a flat on V\u00e1ci Street. He held services in the gymnasium of an elementary school at V\u00e1ci Street 89. A support association formed in 1936. It aimed to build a proper church.
In 1937, they opened a chapel dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. It was located in the basement of a building on Frangep\u00e1n Street. The association then purchased property on V\u00e1ci Street in 1938. They bought an adjacent plot in 1942.
By December 1943, the parish became independent. War and financial struggles hampered church construction. Funds only sufficed to convert a pub on the purchased land into a chapel. Military authorities wanted the basement chapel for air raid shelter.
In 1948, the parish bought more land. However, in 1952, the state nationalized the plots and chapel. This was for new housing development. After compensation, the parish relocated its chapel. It went back to the basement on Frangep\u00e1n Street.
L\u00e9kai L\u00e1szl\u00f3 oversaw the construction of a new church. It also included a rectory at the current location. Istv\u00e1n Szab\u00f3 and P\u00e1l Bors\u00e1nyi designed it. He consecrated Tours-i Szent M\u00e1rton-templom on November 16, 1985.
The church underwent renovations starting in November 2016. A new section was added to the street-facing side. The interior spaces were completely transformed. These improvements facilitated parish activities. It also allowed larger community gatherings. The entire furniture was renewed.
The construction was completed in the summer of 2017. Erd\u0151 P\u00e9ter blessed the renovated Tours-i Szent M\u00e1rton-templom. This took place on September 23.
Today, Tours-i Szent M\u00e1rton-templom stands as a testament to perseverance. It also shows the community’s unwavering faith. It serves as a reminder that even amidst modern buildings, faith finds its place. The spirit of Saint Martin lives on within these walls.
