Can you imagine a city where buildings resemble clouds? Welcome to the Tours Aillaud in Nanterre, just outside of Paris. The Tours Aillaud are an amazing example of modernist architecture. This residential complex is comprised of 18 towers. Emile Aillaud, the architect, wanted to create a living space that was both functional and beautiful. You can see his artistic vision reflected in the playful curves and lines of each building, as well as in the colorful mosaic facades. He wanted the buildings to blend in with the surrounding landscape, so he planted over 1600 trees in the surrounding area. Each apartment got its own tree. The buildings are a sight to behold. They were built between 1973 and 1981. During those years, France was building public housing in the suburbs. So the Tours Aillaud were part of a larger effort to provide affordable housing for people who needed it. But, not all the buildings were finished in the 1980s. This complex is a unique example of how architecture can create not just functional spaces, but also a sense of community. The Tours Aillaud are a symbol of urban experimentation in the 20th century. Although they may not always receive rave reviews, they are a testament to Emile Aillaud’s vision.
