Gazing up at this imposing structure, one might wonder about the stories held within its gleaming facade. This, my friends, is Tour Eqho, a prominent landmark in the La Défense skyline. Originally known as Tour Descartes, this architectural marvel has witnessed the ebb and flow of Parisian business life since its construction in 1988. Tour Eqho stands tall at 140 meters, boasting 42 floors and an impressive 79,000 square meters of space. The architects, Fernando Urquijo, Giorgio Macola, and Jean Willerval, envisioned a modern edifice that would seamlessly blend with the futuristic landscape of La Défense. In 2013, Tour Eqho underwent a significant renovation led by architects Hubert & Roy. Their vision focused on “ouverture” – opening the building to light, to the city, and to its surrounding gardens. This philosophy is evident in the redesigned workspaces, which maximize natural light and offer stunning views. Beyond its sleek exterior, Tour Eqho houses a wealth of amenities. A 330-seat auditorium, a 1,300 square meter fitness center, numerous restaurants, and even a premium hospitality service cater to the needs of its occupants. The building also boasts impressive environmental credentials, holding certifications such as BREEAM Very Good, BREEAM In Use Excellent, and NF HQE. These accolades reflect Tour Eqho’s commitment to sustainable practices. The original architects, Urquijo and Macola, had a notable history together. They collaborated on projects like the Palace of Justice in Padua and housing in Venice’s Giudecca. Their partnership extended to Paris, where they worked on the renovation of Îlot Edouard VII and, with Jean Willerval, brought Tour Eqho to life. So, as you admire Tour Eqho, remember its transformation from Tour Descartes, its commitment to sustainability, and the collaborative genius that shaped its form.
