The T\u00f3th Ilonka Eml\u00e9kh\u00e1z isn’t just a museum. It’s a place of remembrance and education. It honors T\u00f3th Ilonka and all the revolutionaries of 1956.
This building was once her family home. It fell into disrepair but was rescued. The T\u00f3th Ilonka Sz\u00fcl\u0151h\u00e1z\u00e1\u00e9rt Alap\u00edtv\u00e1ny foundation saved it. With the help of the Budapest XVI. district municipality, the house was purchased. It was then transformed into a memorial. The grand opening occurred on October 23, 2016. This marked the 60th anniversary of the 1956 revolution.
Kov\u00e1cs P\u00e9ter the mayor of Budapest XVI. district opened the T\u00f3th Ilonka Eml\u00e9kh\u00e1z. He dedicated it to the young martyr and all freedom fighters.
Inside the T\u00f3th Ilonka Eml\u00e9kh\h\u00e1z, you will find original documents. These belonged to T\u00f3th Ilonka. They illustrate the world of the 1950s. They also depict the life of this medical student.
Beneath the garden lies an educational center. It features a lecture hall. It also includes a replica of the Metropolitan Court’s courtroom. Here, T\u00f3th Ilonka and her fellow defendants faced trial. Imagine the weight of those proceedings echoing in this very space.
The T\u00f3th Ilonka Eml\u00e9kh\u00e1z serves as a venue. It hosts unique history lessons and conferences. It also holds exhibitions about the 1956 revolution.
The creation of the T\u00f3th Ilonka Eml\u00e9kh\u00e1z cost 150 million HUF. This included purchasing the property. The municipality secured 50 million HUF through a grant. This grant came from the Memorial Committee. It was established for the revolution’s 60th anniversary.
The T\u00f3th Ilonka Eml\u00e9kh\u00e1z is part of the Kertv\u00e1rosi History and Remembrance Center. This institution researches the district’s past. It also preserves its heritage. The center has three locations. Besides this house, there is the Kertv\u00e1rosi Local History Collection in M\u00e1ty\u00e1sf\u00f6ld. There is also the Cinkotai T\u00e1jh\u00e1z in Cinkota.
