Slipping through time’s veil, imagine Pest in the Middle Ages. A sturdy wall, 30 meters long, defined the city’s edge. We stand before the Történelmi Városfal Bemutatóhely, a showcase of this medieval marvel. Here, 15 meters of the original wall is visible up close. Another 15 meters hides within a neighboring courtyard, still viewable. The Történelmi Városfal Bemutatóhely brings this history to life. The two-meter difference between the wall’s base and the current street level reveals centuries of change. Information panels and reproductions of old engravings, drawings, and maps enhance the experience. This section of the wall was unearthed in the 1940s during construction. Its importance was recognized, the building plans adjusted, and it was briefly open to the public. It reopened for a short time in the 1960s, then fell into disrepair. Thanks to European Union funding, the Történelmi Városfal Bemutatóhely was fully restored and reopened in 2013. The entrance is at 13/b Királyi Pál utca, near the corner of Vámház körút, next to a plaque. To protect it, the gate is kept locked. To visit, inquire at the ImagineBudapest office across the street at Királyi Pál utca 18. They will open the gate and close it when you leave. The wall is accessible during the office’s opening hours.
