Gazing up at these colossal structures, one might wonder about the dreams that gave birth to the Torres de Satélite. These aren’t just geometric shapes against the sky. They are a testament to artistic vision and urban ambition. The Torres de Satélite, rising from the heart of Ciudad Satélite, were envisioned as a symbol of this burgeoning, modern district in Naucalpan, Mexico. Their story begins in 1957, a collaborative effort between architect Luis Barragán, painter Jesús Reyes Ferreira, and sculptor Mathias Goeritz. Originally, seven towers were planned, reaching dizzying heights. However, budget constraints scaled the project down to five, with the tallest reaching 52 meters and the shortest 30 meters. The colors of the Torres de Satélite are a tale in themselves. Goeritz initially envisioned a monochromatic scheme of oranges. Pressure from builders and investors, however, led to a change. The final palette became a vibrant display of primary subtractive colors: red, blue, and yellow, punctuated by two stark white towers. These bold hues stand as a symbol of the era’s optimistic embrace of modernity. In March 1958, the Torres de Satélite were inaugurated. They immediately became an iconic landmark. Their unique forms even graced the silver screen, appearing in Alejandro Jodorowsky’s surrealist film “The Holy Mountain”. The towers also feature in the music video “Fool Again” by the Irish band Westlife. The Torres de Satélite continue to inspire awe and intrigue. They serve as a powerful reminder of the artistic spirit that shaped Ciudad Satélite and left an indelible mark on Mexico’s urban landscape.
