“Did you hear that rumbling?” whispered a nervous citizen, clutching his cloak tighter. “The earth hasn’t been right since that infernal tower went up!” Right before you stands the Torre delle Milizie, a steadfast sentinel in the heart of Rome. While its nickname, “Nero’s Tower,” hints at ancient origins and fiery spectacle, the truth, my friends, is far more grounded in the medieval cobblestones beneath our feet!

The Torre delle Milizie, built sometime during the powerful reign of Pope Innocent III, around the turn of the 13th century, embodies the turbulent spirit of its time. Forget Nero! This tower witnessed the rise and fall of families like the Annibaldi, the Caetani, and the Conti, each vying for control of Rome. Imagine their banners, emblazoned with fierce creatures, flying from these very walls! Speaking of walls, notice the slight lean of the tower? It’s not your imagination! That dramatic tilt is a lasting reminder of the devastating earthquake of 1348 which, ironically, also toppled the top two floors of the tower, forever altering its skyline. Today, the Torre delle Milizie stands as a weathered giant, a silent narrator of centuries of Roman power struggles. Its imposing presence reminds us that while empires may rise and fall, the Torre delle Milizie, much like Rome itself, endures.
