A church with two names? Right here in Rome, you’ll find the Chiesa di Sant’Orsola, also known as the Purgatory Church. Why the double moniker? The Chiesa di Sant’Orsola has a fascinating history tied to both a saint and the souls believed to be awaiting purification after death. The church itself is a fascinating blend of architectural styles, reflecting its long and somewhat turbulent construction. Work began in the late 16th century, a time when the Renaissance was giving way to the Baroque. While the original plans were ambitious, they were ultimately scaled back, leading to a mix of stylistic influences you see today. However, this blend of styles, from the late Renaissance to the Baroque and even touches of Rococo, only adds to its charm. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a richness that speaks to the church’s importance. Admire the gleaming gold stucco work that adorns the interior, added in the 18th century. Look up to see a stunning ceiling painted by the Milanese artist Natale Penati in the mid-1930s. His work depicts scenes from the life of Saint Anthony of Padua and, most dramatically, the martyrdom of Saint Ursula herself. The Chiesa di Sant’Orsola also houses a treasure trove of art and artifacts. Be sure to take note of the intricately carved wooden pulpit, the sixteenth-century organ, and the various sculptures and paintings that grace the altars and walls. One particularly intriguing piece is a copper basin, believed to be from the 15th century, adorned with intricate floral motifs and scenes from the Annunciation. Some scholars even attribute it to Arab craftsmen working in 13th-century Lucera. The Chiesa di Sant’Orsola is a hidden gem in the heart of Rome, a place where art, history, and faith intertwine to create a captivating experience.
