You see, in the 18th century, this island, with its long coastline and hidden coves, was a prime target for pirates. They came from France, England, and even the Barbary Coast of North Africa. The Torre de San Buenaventura, also known as Castillo de Fuste, was commissioned in 1741 to defend against these maritime marauders. The engineer Claudio de L’Isle, who also designed the Torre del Tostón on the other side of the island, envisioned a network of defenses to protect Fuerteventura’s shores. The Torre de San Buenaventura, built robust and sturdy, stands as a testament to their efforts. It was armed with cannons and manned by a watchful garrison. Imagine the tension, the lookout scanning the horizon for any sign of a sail, the rumble of the cannons if a hostile ship dared to approach!
