Atop this majestic tower before us stands the Torre de Portopí a beacon of history. It’s more than just a lighthouse. It’s a silent sentinel guarding Palma’s harbor for centuries.

The Torre de Portopí boasts a rich history. Its lower section whispers tales of Moorish times. A document from September 12 1300 marks the first official mention of a lighthouse here though in a different location. Imagine a chain stretching from this very tower to the nearby Torre de Paraires. That chain could close off the entire harbor. King Pedro ordered the transformation of the tower into a lighthouse on December 2 1369. Twelve lamps at 40 meters above sea level guided ships. The upper part of the tower as we see it today was constructed around 1613.

The Torre de Portopí has witnessed centuries of change. The powerful cannons of the nearby Castillo de San Carlos once shattered its windows. In those days vandalism also caused problems. The punishment for breaking the lighthouse lantern depended on the age and time of the incident. A child under twelve faced a day in the stocks fed only bread and water. Adults lost a hand. Nighttime vandalism was a capital offense.

In 1617 the lighthouse was moved to its current position to overcome challenges. Its light needed to reach over a small hill where the castle stood. Yet it couldn’t be too high to prevent enemies from using the tower to attack the castle. Until 1971 watchmen kept a constant vigil here protecting Palma’s harbor. In 1807 a rotating optical system was installed a marvel of its time. They even switched to paraffin from Scotland in 1893 replacing the old wooden lantern with a modern metal one. The lighthouse was electrified in 1918. Its unique catadioptric lens from 1927 is still in use making it unique in Spain.

The Torre de Portopí’s light was extinguished in 1972 deemed unnecessary. However its historical significance led to its relighting in 1977. In 1983 it received well-deserved recognition as a Historic-Artistic Monument. Today its interior holds a permanent exhibition of maritime signals among Europe’s best. This Torre de Portopí isn’t simply a building. It’s a testament to Palma’s maritime history a beacon that has illuminated the way for centuries. Let its story inspire you.
