Consider the golden and copper hues of its curtain wall. This is the Torre Catalinas Norte.

The Torre Catalinas Norte is in the Catalinas Norte complex. It is in the Retiro neighborhood of Buenos Aires. This office tower is more than just a building. It represents a significant chapter in Buenos Aires’ urban development.

Let’s rewind to the mid-20th century. The area was underutilized. City planners envisioned a modern business hub. They wanted skyscrapers. The 1960s brought a coup d’état and a revised plan. This plan limited high-rise construction. It paved the way for the Catalinas Norte complex.

Construction began in 1969. The first buildings were the Conurban Tower and the Sheraton Hotel. The Torre Catalinas Norte followed. It opened in 1975. SEPRA Arquitectos designed the Sheraton Hotel and the Torre Catalinas Norte.

Santiago Sánchez Elía, Federico Peralta Ramos, and Alfredo Agostini were the lead architects. They worked with Luis and Héctor Lanari and José Sívori. Juan Carlos Vivo was the structural engineer. Impresit SIDECO S.A. was the contractor.

The Torre Catalinas Norte has a square base. Each side is 30 meters long. It rises 109 meters. Inside, a concrete core supports the structure. Three underground levels provide parking and storage.

The ground floor leads to a mezzanine-level commercial space. Above are 27 floors of offices. The 28th floor houses machinery. The 29th floor contains water tanks and elevator equipment.

Two banks of elevators serve the tower. One serves floors 1 to 15. The other serves floors 16 to 27. A service elevator serves all floors. The curtain wall defines the exterior. Its golden and copper colors make it stand out.

The Torre Catalinas Norte became an iconic part of the Buenos Aires skyline. It contributed to the city’s modern identity. The dictatorship’s economic policies caused a slowdown in the 1980s. Development picked up again in the 1990s.

Today, the Torre Catalinas Norte remains a vital part of the Catalinas Norte complex. It is a testament to vision. It shows the power of urban planning. It is a symbol of Buenos Aires’ ambition. Its golden facade reflects the city’s dynamic spirit.
