Tucked away in the heart of Königsbrück, Töpferei Frommhold whispers tales of resilience and artistry. Do you hear the echoes of the potter’s wheel? Töpferei Frommhold stands as a testament to generations of craftsmanship, a lineage unbroken since Carl-Luis Frommhold first opened its doors in 1851. Imagine the scene: a small pottery shop nestled on the corner of Weißbacher Straße and Badweg, chosen perhaps for its proximity to the old pipe-making workshop that once stood there. Töpferei Frommhold quickly became a cornerstone of the community, its reputation for quality spreading far and wide. One can almost picture the horse-drawn wagons, laden with glazed pottery, traveling from Königsbrück to Schleswig-Holstein and even West Prussia. The arrival of the railway in 1884 further expanded the pottery’s reach, connecting Töpferei Frommhold to a wider world. The Frommhold family faced numerous challenges. The rise of industrial production brought cheaper, more durable porcelain and enamelware. The First World War and the devastating inflation that followed threatened to extinguish the Frommhold flame. Yet, Töpferei Frommhold adapted, embracing the artistic vision of local artist Max Schleinitz. They transformed from a simple brown pottery to a vibrant producer of Lausitzer Buntgeschirr. They incorporated white clay and cobalt blue, and later, intricate sponge-painted designs. Even the transition from wood-fired kilns to coal in 1935, a difficult change for the pottery, could not diminish their dedication. Tragedy struck in 1945. During the final days of World War II, Töpferei Frommhold was destroyed by fire. But even amidst the ashes, the Frommhold spirit remained unbroken. The family rebuilt, first working from the abandoned Schwarz pottery and then returning to their original site in 1948. Töpferei Frommhold persevered through the post-war years, adapting to the changing tastes and economic realities of East Germany. The warmth of the pottery’s wood-fired kiln, the hum of the potter’s wheel, and the dry humor of the artisans continued to draw visitors. Today, Töpferei Frommhold, now under the stewardship of Jens Frommhold, continues this legacy. The pottery’s wares, once carried by horse-drawn wagons, are now shipped across the globe. The story of Töpferei Frommhold is a story of resilience. It’s a story of a family’s unwavering dedication to their craft. It’s a story etched in clay and fire, a story that continues to unfold with each new piece created.
