Tooting and Mitcham United FC

The modern-day Tooting & Mitcham United Football Club has a long and storied history, with its roots going back to 1887. They’ve been around for nearly a century, witnessing the rise and fall of footballing fortunes. Standing right before you is Imperial Fields, their home since 2002. It was formerly a training ground for Chelsea, Crystal Palace, and Brentford. The ground is also known as the Campus Society Stadium, hosting the VLUK Tooting and Mitcham FC Campus which has graduated a number of young players, including some who have moved on to play professionally. They’ve had their share of triumphs, like winning the Isthmian League twice in the 1950s and reaching the fourth round of the FA Cup in the 1970s. They have also won the Surrey Senior Cup nine times and the London Senior Cup six times. Their FA Cup run in the 1975-76 season was particularly memorable. Their journey to the last 32 involved beating Football League side Swindon Town 2-1 after a replay. The game was played at Tooting’s Sandy Lane ground, a Wednesday afternoon in front of a crowd of 10,000. Despite their success, Tooting & Mitcham United have also seen challenging times, including relegation to the ninth tier in 2022-23. They may not have been the biggest club in the world, but they were still a vital part of the London football landscape. Their journey through the years has shaped the club they are today, and their story is sure to continue.
