Established in 1907 as the Tongji German Medical School Tongji Middle School boasts a rich history. It wasn’t always a middle school. Initially founded by German physicians the school’s name Tongji is a Shanghainese approximation of the German word deutsche meaning German. This reflects the collaboration between German and Chinese individuals. The school expanded to include engineering. It officially became Tongji University in 1923 or 1924.
The Second Sino-Japanese War significantly impacted Tongji. The university campus moved several times. It relocated from Shanghai to Zhejiang Province Jiangxi Province Yunnan Province and finally Sichuan Province. The journey was long and arduous. Eventually it returned to Shanghai in 1946.
