Born from the heart of Jaltenco Tonanitla emerged on July 25 2003. This wasn’t just the birth of a municipality. It was the culmination of a century-long struggle. A people’s yearning for autonomy finally realized. Imagine the generations who fought for this moment. For generations Tonanitla existed as a village within Jaltenco. They toiled the land. They built their lives. They dreamed of independence. In 1931 Santa Maria Tonanitla secured 524 hectares of land for grazing. More land followed in 1935. Even the construction of a primary school in 1949. This involved the expropriation of land. This shows the community’s growing determination. The fight for Tonanitla’s recognition was a long and arduous journey. It tested the resilience of its people. Yet they persevered. Their spirit unbroken. Their vision clear. Finally in 1996 the LIV Legislature of the State Congress of Mexico State acted. Decrees 152 153 and 154 created Tonanitla as a municipality. These decrees were published in the Government Gazette on July 29 of that year. The birth of Tonanitla is more than a date on a calendar. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. A community that fought for its identity. For its autonomy. For its rightful place in history. Tonanitla’s story continues to this day. It’s a story of struggle. A story of perseverance. A story of triumph. Stand here today and feel the weight of that history. The legacy of those who came before. Their fight for freedom echoes. Their voices linger. Their dream lives on. In the very soil beneath your feet.
