Was this grand structure truly meant to be the final resting place of Agrippina, mother of Nero? The Tomba di Agrippina, as it’s known, stands as a testament to the grandeur of the Roman era. Despite its name, it’s not actually a tomb. It was once a magnificent theater-nymphaeum, part of a sprawling maritime villa that time has sadly eroded. Imagine the echoes of music and laughter that once filled this space. During the Augustan or Julio-Claudian age, this structure served as an odeion, a covered theater designed for musical performances and mime. However, between the end of the 1st and the beginning of the 2nd century AD, it underwent a transformation, becoming an exedra nymphaeum. Look around and you’ll notice the three hemicycles arranged on different levels, a testament to its architectural complexity. The lowest hemicycle rests about 13 meters below the current beach level. Above it, the median hemicycle boasts a striking rampant vault. On its extrados, you can still make out the marks of a flight of steps, a whisper of its former glory. Three openings, interspersed with windows, punctuate the external wall, allowing light to filter into the space. Deeper still, a vault adorned with stucco covers another area, its beauty echoing in the decorated walls of the niches. A corridor, perhaps once connecting the building to the heart of the villa, whispers of a time long gone. The Tomba di Agrippina stands as a silent sentinel, a reminder of the grandeur of a bygone era. It invites us to imagine the lives that once graced its steps and the stories whispered within its walls.
