This unassuming stele, the Tom Hunter Memorial Stele, marks the extraordinary courage of a young man from Edinburgh. Born in 1923, Thomas Peck Hunter grew up in the shadow of Tynecastle High School, the same school where the renowned poet Wilfred Owen once taught. Before the call of duty, Hunter’s life was simple. He worked as an apprentice stationer, his days filled with ink and paper rather than battles and bravery. However, war has a way of unearthing the dormant hero within. At 21, Corporal Hunter found himself in the maelstrom of World War II, fighting with the 43 (RM) Commando in Italy. It was during Operation Roast, at Lake Comacchio in 1945, that Hunter’s courage blazed brightly. Under a torrent of enemy fire, he charged alone across an open battlefield towards a cluster of houses occupied by German soldiers. His solitary act of defiance was so unexpected and fierce that it demoralized the enemy. Six German soldiers surrendered outright, while the rest fled in disarray. The Tom Hunter Memorial Stele stands as a testament to his selfless bravery, a permanent reminder that heroism can bloom in the most unexpected places.
