“An electrical worker turned politician, can you imagine that?” whispered a passerby, gesturing towards the building at 38 Church Road. “That’s where Tom Cox lived, a Labour Party man through and through.” Tom Cox. The name might not ring a bell for everyone, but for those who remember his era, he was a familiar face in British politics. He served as the Member of Parliament for Wandsworth Central and later for Tooting, representing his constituents for over three decades. Before the halls of Parliament beckoned, Cox honed his leadership skills closer to home. He served as an alderman of Fulham Borough Council and as a Councillor for Halford Ward on the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Education was a cause close to his heart, and he dedicated time to the Inner London Education Authority. But his journey to becoming a Member of Parliament wasn’t always smooth sailing. He first attempted to enter Parliament in 1966, standing for Stroud, but fate had other plans. His perseverance paid off, and he eventually secured his place in the House of Commons, serving under both Harold Wilson and James Callaghan. Even after his long and distinguished career in politics, Tom Cox remained rooted in his community, residing in Southfields until his passing in 2018. His legacy as a dedicated public servant and a champion for his constituents lives on.
