The Toleston shoreline was a bustling area. It was here, with a growing number of German immigrant families, that Tolleston was established. The town of Tolleston boomed with an early population of mostly German farmers. By 1870, there were 80 families and a church. Tolleston was the main settlement in the region, and the Gibson Hotel drew the attention of US Steel officials as the town held a strategic position. The future of Tolleston was tied to the future of Gary, Indiana, but Tolleston had dreams of its own.
