A Soviet Aeroflot Tu-104 Tekel once graced this very runway. This is Tököl Airport a place steeped in history.

Tököl Airport wasn’t always a quiet corner of Budapest. For decades it played a crucial role in Hungary’s military and aviation history. From its beginnings as a factory producing Messerschmitt Bf 210s and Bf 109s during World War II to its later use by the Hungarian Air Force and the Soviet Air Force. It has witnessed immense change.

During World War II the Dunai Repülőgépgyár Danubian Aerospace was located here. They produced aircraft for both the Luftwaffe and the Hungarian Air Force. In April 1944 the US Air Force bombed the airport and factory dropping over 200 tons of bombs. The attacks continued throughout the summer. The airport and factory were vital to the war effort making them prime targets.

After the war the runway was extended to a remarkable 2500 meters. In 1951 the Hungarian Air Force received MiG-15s and Yak-18s. These were stationed right here at Tököl. The 1956 revolution changed everything. Soviet forces seized the Hungarian aircraft. Hungarian forces weren’t allowed back until 1968. Imagine the tension the frustration.

For years after the revolution Tököl Airport housed Hungarian VIP planes. Two An-24s and two Il-14s were based here. The Dunai Repülőgépgyár remained an important airplane overhaul factory. Soviet MiG-21UMs were even spotted here around 1983. The Cold War ended. In April 1991 the last Soviet Air Force squadron departed. The airfield reverted to Hungarian control.

The main hangar of Danubian Aerospace was sadly demolished. A Tesco supermarket now stands in its place. The runway itself is much shorter now. Local complaints about noise led to its reduction to around 1000 meters. This limits the size of aircraft that can land. Despite this Tököl Airport’s history continues to resonate. It even played roles in major films. Steven Spielberg chose Tököl to represent Fürstenfeldbruck in his film Munich. Tony Scott used parts of the airport as a Chinese prison in Spy Game.

Tököl Airport may be largely deserted now. But its story lives on. The echoes of history the ghosts of aircraft past all remain. They are woven into the very fabric of this place. It reminds us that even seemingly quiet places can whisper incredible tales. What a past this runway has witnessed.
