Have you ever wondered what life was like before modern plumbing? Let’s journey back in time at the Toilet Ruins in Singapore. These ruins offer a glimpse into a fascinating, albeit somewhat smelly, chapter of Singapore’s history. The Toilet Ruins represent the remnants of Singapore’s “night soil bucket system”. Before modern sanitation, toilets were simply collection points. People used buckets, and these buckets, filled with “night soil,” were collected nightly and replaced with empty ones. Imagine the scene at the Toilet Ruins: a night soil carrier, likely a Chinese coolie, making his rounds through back alleys. He would access the buckets through niches in the walls of shophouses, much like the ones you might see in conserved areas today. The work was arduous and, let’s face it, unpleasant. Carriers sometimes missed collections or even went on strike. Residents had to be quick to finish their business before the carrier arrived, sometimes even shouting to delay the exchange. Rural areas had it even tougher, often requiring a trek to a separate outhouse, sometimes armed with a kerosene lamp or candle for those afraid of the dark. The night soil was often used as fertilizer in gardens and plantations on the outskirts of the city. This system continued until as late as 1987. Can you imagine Singapore, the pristine city we know today, once nicknamed “Stinkapore”? The Toilet Ruins serve as a potent reminder of how far Singapore has come in terms of sanitation. They stand in stark contrast to the modern, efficient system we enjoy today, a testament to Singapore’s transformation and a symbol of the progress we often take for granted.
