What secrets do two bronze lions hold? Right here in Fælledparken, we stand before the “To Løver” statue, also known as “The Disgruntled”. These life-sized lions, a male standing proudly and a female resting at his feet, have witnessed over a century of Copenhagen’s history. Cast in bronze in 1905 by the sculptor Lauritz Jensen, the To Løver statue was a gift to the city from the “Cand.phil. Victor Freunds Legat”. Jensen originally envisioned his powerful lions gracing the prestigious Langelinie promenade, or perhaps the serene Søndermarken park. However, their first home was in the gardens of what is now Israels Plads. Their journey didn’t end there. Concerns arose about potential damage from youngsters using the statues for “gymnastic exercises”. Imagine, city officials worried about broken tails and other “molestations”! So, in 1913, the lions were moved to Poul Henningsens Plads, guarding the entrance to Fælledparken. Even there, they weren’t settled. Their final move brought them to this very spot in Fælledparken, near Klosterfælleden, where they continue to watch over the city. These bronze beasts, measuring 165 x 103 x 144 cm, are more than just impressive sculptures. They are a testament to artistic vision, civic generosity, and the surprising ways public art can interact with the lives of its citizens. They also embody the unexpected journeys some artworks take. The To Løver may not roar, but their silent presence speaks volumes about Copenhagen’s past.
