Gazing at Tingbjerg Bibliotek\\Kulturhus, its striking, wedge-shaped design evokes a sense of modern artistry. Tingbjerg Bibliotek\\Kulturhus isn’t just a building; it’s a testament to resilience and community spirit. Originally, Tingbjerg was envisioned as a utopian community in the 1950s by architect Steen Eiler Rasmussen and landscape architect Carl Theodor Su00f8rensen. Complete with its own school, church, and housing, Tingbjerg was designed with warm yellow brick and surrounded by green spaces. However, over time, the area faced challenges and was labeled a marginalized area. Yet, amidst these struggles, Tingbjerg Bibliotek\\Kulturhus emerged as a beacon of hope. Opened in October 2018, this 1,500 square meter space was designed by COBE architects to be a “social and cultural engine” for the community. The building itself is a striking sight. Its narrowest point measures a mere 1.5 meters wide. The angled roof slopes dramatically towards the entrance of Tingbjerg School, to which it is connected. The transparent glass facade, embedded in the wider part of the wedge, reveals the vibrant activities within, like an old-fashioned typeset case. This “typeset case” design allows the community to engage in various activities within multifunctional rooms. The heart of Tingbjerg Bibliotek\\Kulturhus is its open foyer, which stretches three-dimensionally throughout the building. Different floor levels, complete with niches and balconies, create a sense of a small village nestled on a hillside. This design encourages social interaction while also offering quiet nooks for contemplation. The building materials pay homage to Tingbjerg’s modernist history. Yellow brick baguettes and a sloping roof mirror the surrounding architecture. Inside, warm wooden plywood lamellas complement the exterior brick. The A.P. Mu00f8ller Fonden contributed 6 million kroner to the project’s nearly 58 million kroner construction cost. The result is a stunning blend of old and new, symbolizing Tingbjerg’s enduring spirit. Inside, you’ll find more than just books. There’s a café, a creative workshop, meeting rooms for local associations, and a hall for concerts and theater performances. Tingbjerg Bibliotek\\Kulturhus is a vibrant cultural center, a community hub, and a symbol of hope for the future.
