Whispers carried on the wind speak of Tindaya, the “Big Mountain.” It rises from the arid landscape of Fuerteventura, a pyramid of trachyte, a rare volcanic rock. Tindaya is more than just a peak; it’s a sacred mountain, a place of power for the ancient inhabitants of this island. The Mahos, the indigenous people of Fuerteventura, believed Tindaya was a living entity, a conduit to the gods. They carved over 300 podomorphic engravings, foot-shaped symbols, into the rock face. These “podomorfos” are not mere decorations. Some point towards Tenerife’s El Teide and Gran Canaria’s Pico de las Nieves, suggesting Tindaya served as a celestial map, an astronomical clock marking solstices and guiding rituals. Imagine the Mahos gathered here, performing ceremonies under the vast Canary Island sky. Were these offerings for rain, prayers for prosperity, or rituals of justice? The mystery remains. Even after the Castilian conquest in 1404, Tindaya’s mystique endured. Whispers turned to tales of witches gathering in a nearby cave, the “Bailadero de las Brujas,” performing their own secret rites. The later construction of the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad seems a direct response, an attempt to suppress the mountain’s persistent pagan whispers. Today, Tindaya stands protected, a Natural Monument and a testament to Fuerteventura’s rich past. The mountain invites contemplation, urging us to connect with the island’s ancient spirit. Though climbing to the summit is restricted, the base of Tindaya offers marked trails, where you can feel the weight of history and imagine the echoes of rituals past.
