Nestled in the affluent Forest Hill neighbourhood, the Timothy Eaton Memorial Church stands as a testament to a bygone era. This magnificent Gothic Revival structure, completed in 1915, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a memorial to Timothy Eaton, the visionary founder of the Eaton’s department store empire. His family, Margaret and John Craig Eaton, generously donated the land and funded the construction of this architectural gem. The Timothy Eaton Memorial Church first opened its doors to the community as a Sunday School in 1911. Services were held there until the completion of the main sanctuary four years later. Imagine the early congregants, finding solace and community within these very walls.

The Timothy Eaton Memorial Church boasts stunning stained-glass windows, a hallmark of its design. One of the most renowned is a 1915 reproduction of Holman Hunt’s “The Light of the World,” a poignant tribute to Timothy Eaton himself. After Sir John Craig Eaton’s passing, additional memorial windows were installed, further enriching the church’s artistic legacy. Most of the stained glass within the Timothy Eaton Memorial Church was crafted by the Toronto-based Robert McCausland Company, adding a local touch to this grand edifice. This church has been more than just a place for Sunday sermons. It has also played a role in significant life events. For example, famed Canadian fighter pilot Billy Bishop was married here, and decades later, his funeral service was held within these same walls.

The Timothy Eaton Memorial Church has long been recognized for its captivating preaching and inspiring music. This tradition of outreach has extended beyond its physical walls. The church has maintained radio broadcasts, and later internet broadcasts, of its services, sharing its message with a wider audience. You can still tune in to 1540 CHIN-AM on Sunday mornings to hear the service. The Timothy Eaton Memorial Church stands proudly on St. Clair Avenue West. It has graced the City of Toronto Heritage Property Inventory since January 2008. This designation ensures its preservation for generations to come. The church has continued to serve the community, its history intertwined with the city’s growth and transformation.
