“Did you know Timotheus Kirke was once a small church hall?” The imposing structure of Timotheus Kirke stands before you. It’s a testament to the growth of Valby. Before 1900 Valby was part of Frederiksberg’s parish. The area boomed. Thousands moved into new neighborhoods. Jesuskirken couldn’t handle the expanding congregation. So in 1911 a smaller church hall was built. It was designed by architect Jens Christian Kofoed. This initial structure served as a temporary solution.

Fundraising efforts began. A national collection helped raise money for a larger church. By 1928 enough funds were gathered. A new church could be built and consecrated. The new Timotheus Kirke was constructed just south of the existing rectory. This caused some controversy. People felt that the priest built his own house before the church. The old church hall was repurposed as a community center.

The name Timotheus honors a follower of Paul the Apostle. The church’s design reflects Kofoed’s inspiration from medieval monasteries. It resembles Løgums Kloster Kirke. Timotheus Kirke features a cross-shaped layout. It incorporates elements from Gothic architecture. The church’s bright interior is striking. Tall windows showcase Ib Geertsen’s glass mosaics. Mogens Jørgensen’s altarpiece adds to the beauty. A crucifix hangs on the wall. It’s a gift from the congregation in 1952. The crucifix is a copy of a medieval one in Særslev Kirke. It was created by woodcarver Frithioff Jensen.

Timotheus Kirke is more than just a place of worship. It reflects the history of Valby. It shows how a small community grew. It highlights the dedication of those who built the church. It remains a symbol of faith and community in Copenhagen. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Let the history of Timotheus Kirke resonate with you.
