Breuer-Weil created “Flight” to celebrate the restart of international travel. We have all been craving to move again. This sculpture marks that moment. We are escaping from ourselves. Camden Council granted permission for the installation. It marks the 200th anniversary of St Pancras New Church. The church was completed in 1822. It is famed for its four Caryatides. An earlier sculpture by Breuer-Weil was unveiled at Marble Arch on May 31, 2018. It was part of Westminster City Council’s City of Sculpture program. This sculpture also represents weightlessness. It also represents freedom. It suggests a society where nobody is bound to one place.
Breuer-Weil gains inspiration for his sculptures through travelling. He produces many drawings and paintings in flight. He also comments that his sculptures represent being bound to family and past.
Breuer-Weil says the piece is intimately connected with his Jewish upbringing. Many of his sculptures have images of people attached with straps. These express familial relationships. They make visible the connections between people. “Flight” connects the figure to the earth. It connects him to his past. These connections allow him to soar.
The City of Sculpture program gives access to public art. It is made possible by the council. They work with galleries to commission public art. Marble Arch has been the site of temporary pieces since 2010. “Still Water” by Nic Fiddian-Green is a permanent sculpture at Marble Arch. It is the largest freestanding bronze sculpture in London. It stands 33 ft high.
