“A bridge built of timber? In this day and age?” you might ask, eyebrows raised in disbelief. And yet, here stands the timber bridge, a testament to a time when Melbourne’s aspirations were first taking shape across the Yarra River. The timber bridge, now sadly just a ruin, reminds us of Melbourne’s earliest attempts to tame the Yarra. It wasn’t fancy like its later, grander counterparts. But it served a vital purpose. Imagine the year 1845. Melbourne was a bustling young town, barely two decades old. The need to connect the growing settlements on either side of the Yarra was becoming crucial. This led to the formation of the Melbourne Bridge Company. They constructed a simple yet functional timber toll bridge, right downstream from where Princes Bridge now stands. It wasn’t built to last forever, just long enough to serve the immediate needs of a rapidly expanding city. The timber bridge saw it all: bullock carts laden with wool, horse-drawn carriages ferrying elegant citizens, and even the muddy boots of gold prospectors, all making their way across the Yarra. But progress, as they say, waits for no bridge. Within six years, the grand vision of a permanent stone bridge, designed by David Lennox, took hold. This marked the end of the line for our humble timber bridge. Yet, its legacy lives on, a whisper from a time when Melbourne was finding its feet, a time when a simple timber bridge symbolized the city’s ambition and drive.
