Wow What a fantastic playground this is.
Welcome to the Tim Neville Arboretum a true gem nestled in Ferntree Gully. This isn’t just any park. It’s a place with a rich history and a vibrant community spirit. Originally an apple orchard owned by the Dobson family the land transformed significantly in 1975. Knox City Council took over and made the Arboretum their major Bicentenary project.
The arboretum truly embodies the spirit of ‘The People’s Park’. Community involvement was crucial. Local residents and children crafted many of the artworks adorning the space. They made the beautiful tiles you’ll see scattered throughout. Even the trees were donated by families and businesses. School children enthusiastically helped plant them. Local companies donated materials. Service clubs generously built the free BBQs you see here.
The playground is a special highlight. Recently upgraded it features a flying fox a castle fort and even a dragon-themed water play area. There’s a new sandpit with added water features a large slide a ‘quad bay’ swing set and a new drawbridge. Multiple interactive play elements cater to all ages. The play area has shade sails over the sandpit and water play areas. It’s fully fenced ensuring children’s safety. Wheelchair-accessible ramps and wider paths make it inclusive for everyone.
Beyond the playground the arboretum offers a serene escape. There are sun-drenched and shaded grassy areas perfect for picnics. Explore the beautifully maintained flower beds and rose gardens. Admire the lake and wetlands system with its charming ducks. A boardwalk offers stunning views. The Arboretum also boasts a gazebo an amphitheatre a sculpted wall ample seating and easy-walking pathways. You’ll even find a war memorial in the quiet part of the gardens a reminder of the area’s history.
Notice the thoughtful design features such as the even walking paths the accessible ramps and the plentiful shade. These details reflect the Arboretum’s commitment to inclusivity and visitor comfort. Remember to keep your dogs on a leash they are welcome here but need to be leashed. There’s even a pavilion should the weather turn unexpectedly rainy. Plenty of off-road parking is available on Dorset Road and Frances Crescent provides on-street parking.
In 1993 the Arboretum was named after Tim Neville the former Chief Executive of the City of Knox. His vision shaped this vibrant space his belief in community involvement and his dedication are woven into the very fabric of this wonderful place.
