Established in Pasir Ris in 1995 Sakya Tenphel Ling is a significant Tibetan Buddhist temple. It’s one of the first in Southeast Asia. This temple’s story begins with the Singapore Buddha Sasana Society. Founded in 1965 the Society initially met in a classroom. Later it found homes in Serangoon and Geylang before settling in Pasir Ris.

The year 1978 marked a turning point. Sakya Trizin Ngawang Kunga the 41st head of the Sakya lineage visited Singapore. He became the Society’s spiritual patron. He then sent Ponlop Lama Tashi Tenzin a former principal of the Tantric College of Sakya Monastery in Tibet to serve as the Society’s first Resident Monk.

Sakya Tenphel Ling quickly became a regional center for the Sakya school. This is one of four major schools of Mahayana Tibetan Buddhism. The temple regularly welcomes monks from Nepal India Taiwan and other countries. They conduct religious services including pujas prayers rituals and dharma lessons.

The temple’s artwork is unique. Visiting and resident monks create the paintings and carvings. They follow the Sakya color theory. Red blue and white represent deities associated with wisdom compassion and power. The shrines inside house representations of the Buddha bodhisattvas like Tara and Chenrezig and stupas for Sakya spiritual leaders.

Sakya Tenphel Ling isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the vibrant Tibetan Buddhist tradition in Singapore. It’s a place where ancient rituals meet modern life. It’s a place where people from all walks of life come together in prayer meditation and spiritual learning. It’s a quiet oasis of peace in a bustling city. The temple’s significance goes beyond its walls. It has played a crucial role in spreading Tibetan Buddhist teachings across Southeast Asia. It’s a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the global reach of spiritual traditions.
