“Lost souls seeking solace, broken hearts yearning for redemption.” These words echoed in the hallowed halls of Tianming Church, a sanctuary of faith amidst the bustling cityscape of Shanghai. Tianming Church, also known as Jingyi Church, stands as a testament to the enduring power of belief. It has weathered storms of history and revolution.

Tianming Church, originally named Ever-Spring Hall, began its life not as a place of worship, but as a private residence. Built in 1553 by Pan Yunduan, the governor of Sichuan, it was a gift for his father. This tranquil oasis within the Pan family estate later became a beacon of hope for Shanghai’s burgeoning Catholic community. In 1640, Martina Pan, granddaughter of the influential Catholic convert Xu Guangqi, acquired the hall. She offered it to Father Francesco Brancati, an Italian Jesuit missionary. Thus, Ever-Spring Hall was reborn as Jingyi Church, the “Hall of the Only Respected”.

Tianming Church quickly became a spiritual hub, drawing in a devoted congregation. A side hall was even added for astronomical observations, blending scientific inquiry with religious devotion. However, the church’s serene existence was disrupted in 1665 when Christianity was banned in China. Father Brancati, after 28 years of service in Shanghai, was forced to leave for Guangzhou. The church building was repurposed, becoming the office of a Coastal Defense official. Though the ban was lifted in 1671, allowing the Jesuits to return, another wave of persecution struck in 1724 under the Yongzheng Emperor. The church was confiscated and transformed into a Taoist temple dedicated to Guan Yu, the god of war.

The winds of change shifted once more in 1844 with the end of the Opium War. Christianity was legalized, and confiscated church lands were ordered to be returned. However, Tianming Church, now a Taoist temple, remained exempt. It wasn’t until 1860, under the Treaty of Tianjin, that the church was finally restored to its original purpose. The Taoist temple was relocated, and a Catholic school, St. Berchmans, was established on the grounds.

Even amidst the tumultuous 20th century, Tianming Church continued to serve its community. A primary school, Shangzhi, was established on the site in the 1930s. The church thrived, boasting a congregation of around 600 parishioners. However, with the advent of the Communist Revolution in 1949, religious activities were once again suppressed. Tianming Church’s role as a place of worship ended in 1950. The school was renamed Wutong Road Primary School, and the main church hall was repurposed as a gymnasium. Despite its changing roles, Tianming Church’s historical significance was recognized. It was added to the list of Cultural Heritage sites in Shanghai in 1959. Although briefly removed during the Cultural Revolution, the title was restored in 1981. Today, Tianming Church stands silent, a poignant reminder of Shanghai’s rich spiritual tapestry.
