High above the Carlsberg Brewhouse in Copenhagen a mighty bronze Thor reigns. This isn’t just any statue. It’s Thor’s battle against the Jötunns a breathtaking depiction of Norse mythology.

Created by Carl Bonnesen in 1901 this magnificent sculpture originally competed for a prominent spot at Langelinie. The judges however didn’t share the same vision. Anders Bundgaard’s Gefion Fountain ultimately won that coveted location.

This four-meter-high four-and-a-half-meter-wide masterpiece now stands proudly overlooking the city. Thor rides his chariot pulled by his trusty goats Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr. Notice the intricate detail. The wheels and chariot are adorned with a left-facing swastika an ancient symbol far predating its later misuse. This symbol was part of the Carlsberg logo until the 1930s when it was understandably removed. You can also find it on the brewery’s massive elephant statues.

The bronze itself has a beautiful greenish patina. This isn’t decay. It’s simply oxidation a natural process that adds to the statue’s aged charm.

Though well-known to Copenhageners many visitors miss this hidden gem. Take a moment to appreciate the power and artistry of Thor’s battle against the Jötunns. A truly remarkable piece of history art and brewing heritage. It’s a testament to the enduring power of Norse myths and a hidden treasure in the heart of Copenhagen.
