Thorn Creek Reformed Church wasn’t always here. Its roots lie in the First Reformed Church of Roseland Chicago. Founded in 1849 by Dutch immigrants this congregation flourished. By 1867 they had built a beautiful church complete with a belfry. But there was one thing missing a bell.
Jan Ton a founding member took it upon himself to raise the funds. He collected $300 enough to purchase a bell a hefty sum in those days. This bell was shipped from a foundry in Troy New York. Or so the story went. A closer look reveals a more intricate narrative. The bell that arrived was not the first. It had a tale of misadventure and mud. Jan’s journey to retrieve it from the mire was arduous.
In 1887 the Roseland church built a new building needing a new bell. The original bell likely made its way to the First Reformed Church of Lansing Illinois. Tragedy struck in 1945. A devastating fire consumed the Lansing church. Eyewitnesses recall the bell’s clang as it crashed to the ground.
The current bell at Thorn Creek Reformed Church is the second bell from Roseland. Cast in 1887 it’s a testament to the enduring faith of the congregation. The church itself moved to South Holland in the 1970s retaining its identity and history. This church isn’t just a building it’s a living testament to a community’s unwavering spirit.
