Who brought football to Brazil? Most think it was Charles Miller. But here, at the Thomas Donohoe Statue, a different story unfolds. The Thomas Donohoe Statue stands tall, a tribute to the Scottish textile technician and a pioneer of football in Brazil. Thomas Donohoe arrived in Bangu, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro, in 1894. He brought with him not just his family, but also his passion for football. Donohoe was surprised to find that Brazilians had no knowledge of the sport. He promptly wrote to his wife, requesting she bring a football and pump. In September 1894, beside the Bangu Textile Factory, the first recorded football match in Brazil took place. It was a six-a-side match between British workers, predating Charles Miller’s famous São Paulo game. Bangu Atlético Clube, the local team, proudly traces its origins back to Donohoe and his colleagues. They commissioned this five-meter tall statue to honor Donohoe’s contribution to the sport that has become synonymous with Brazilian culture. This tribute, unveiled for the 2014 World Cup, stands as a reminder of the global connections forged through sport, a testament to Thomas Donohoe, the man who brought \”the beautiful game\” to Brazil.
